Let’s just face it as human beings we place labels on EVERYTHING! Ourselves, others, whole groups, what we like, don’t like and the list goes on. Labels aren’t always bad but sometimes the way we categorize people doesn’t highlight who they truly are.
On any given day- I can run through the list of people I encounter and/or things heard or said around me. I’m a people watcher and it’s often entertaining or downright sad the things you see and hear just watching people. We have labels that follow us in our lives: white, black, racist, unwanted, fake, negative, privileged, cocky, and the list goes on.
I’m as guilty as the next in assigning labels. As often as I’ve assigned labels to others I’ve honestly done the exact same thing to myself over the years- “oh I’m just an emotional person or I’m just a stay at home mom.” Those may be some of my characteristics but there is much more to my life than just that.
During my youth, I never felt good enough. Sure I got excellent grades in school and was always active in several sports and clubs, but I never felt like I truly belonged. I looked at myself as always average- just flying far under the radar. I’m still sort of a behind the scenes person now, but I’ve learned to love and embrace who I am. Although there are always ways to improve and become more like Christ, I know God has created me the exact way he wanted me and there are no flaws in His plan!
I am thankful that God loves me just the way I am…labels and all! There is nothing anyone can do or say to separate us from His love. I’m fascinated with how God places His own and MORE important labels on us- beloved, overcomer, believer…
- forgiven– In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace. Ephesians 1:7
- blessed– And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. 2 Corinthians 9:8
- victorious– For the Lord, your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory. Deuteronomy 20:4
- daughter– But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God. John 1:12
These are the labels that truly matter. This is where our focus needs to be.
What does God say about you?
No in all these things we are more than victorious through Him who loved us. For I am persuaded that not even death or life, angels or rulers, things present or things to come, hostile powers, height or depth, or any other created thing will have the power to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord! Romans 8:37-39
