“And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.”  Philippians 1:9-11

Is it hard for you to make a decision? Do you need to make a very important decision soon and can’t make up your mind? Did you know God’s Word talks about how you and I can find wisdom and discernment? There is absolutely nothing you will face today that God doesn’t have a word of wisdom or encouragement for you in the Bible.

You may not believe me.  Read the Scriptures below for yourself.

Here are just a few of the verses to help you with discernment. As you read these verses ask the Lord to speak to your heart and mind and help you get on the right path.

“You can discern the face of the sky and of the earth, but how is it you do not discern this time? Yes, and why, even of yourselves, do you not judge what is right?”   Luke 12:56-57

“…do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”  Romans 12:2

“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), finding out what is acceptable to the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them.”        Ephesians 5:8-11

“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith….”   I Peter 5:8-9

“…everyone who partakes only of milk [elementary teaching] is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. But solid food [solid Biblical teaching] belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.”        Hebrews 5:12-14

“The Bible is God’s message to everybody. We deceive ourselves if we claim to want to hear His voice but neglect the primary channel through which it comes. We must read His Word. We must obey it. We must live it, which means rereading it throughout our lives!”     —Elizabeth Elliott

How do we begin seeking God for discernment?

“And if you leave God’s paths and go astray, you will hear a voice behind you say, “No, this is the way; walk here.” Isaiah 30:21

Here is an acronym to help you remember what to do for your decision-making:

SPLASH

  • Seek God (Matthew 6:33)
  • Pray to God (Philippians 4:6)
  • Listen and wait on the Lord (Proverbs 1:23 and Psalm 27:14)
  • Ask God for wisdom and understanding  (Matthew 7:7)
  • Shape your decision according to Scripture (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

I am convinced that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him. (Romans 8:28) I encourage you today to seek God’s true wisdom and strength (James 3:17-18) to keep you on the right path.

“Thy Word is a light onto my feet and a light unto my path.” Psalm 119:105
