“Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise…” Proverbs 13:30

I clearly remember walking along the street in my early twenty’s and asking the Lord,

Please send me someone who can walk through life with me. I’m lonely. I need guidance on my career decisions. I need help!”

I knew this was going to be difficult. I was just one little person in a huge sea of people and I didn’t have a network of mature godly women that could hang out with me on a weekly basis.

Just for a second I secretly thought, “Well God, you’ve got your hands full with this prayer request.”

Maybe you can relate.

As usual, I underestimated the Great I AM!

God gave me an amazing godly mature woman who agreed to be my mentor and help me grow spiritually, emotionally and mentally.

She was willing to invest her time, love, support and encouragement into my life. This mentoring relationship changed me forever. She was a godly mature woman ahead of me spiritually and in many other practical life experiences.

I want to encourage you to ask God in a simple honest prayer to send you a mentor too.

Nothing fancy.

God loves honest, simple and to the point prayers.

The Lord says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you.” Psalm 32:8 (NLT)

After praying, begin to seek the will of God and search for a Mentor.

The timing is in God’s hands. And God is never late.

It could happen in 24 hours or maybe in a few weeks. Nevertheless, continue to believe your God is Faithful and Able to supply your all your needs.

Where do you begin?

Here are 7 Helpful hints (Plus One Bonus) to begin looking for a Mentor:

  • Your local church
  • Your work place
  • Your neighborhood get together
  • The Gym where you exercise
  • A Friend of a friend
  • A Community Picnic or event
  • A Bible Study small group

And the Bonus Helpful Hint that should never be overlooked or underestimated:

  • Watch for God’s open door of opportunity

What do you do in the meantime?

No matter how long or how short the time span between your prayer request and your answer from God, let me suggest that you keep active and moving forward.

What does forward motion look like while you wait for answered prayer?

  • Continue to read your Bible and pray
  • Read websites, blogs and articles on godly mentoring
  • Start some conversations with a few friends, family or co-workers on the topic of Mentoring
  • Grab an autobiography of a godly woman who could have been a good mentor for you. (Elizabeth Elliott, Fanny Crosby, Corrie Ten Boom, Anne Graham Lotz, Thelma Wells, Darlene Zschech… )
  • Keep walking across the room and seeking out a mentor

Be encouraged. Finding a mentor isn’t as difficult as it may seem.

Remember, God is Faithful and Able to supply all your needs.

Yes! I have had a mentor in the past and am currently mentoring a couple of young ladies. I think women in general crave this type of relationship and need it desperately. We need someone not only to look up to and learn from, but someone who can hear our heart, share experiences with and walk along side of us as we walk this journey of godly womanhood. I am honored to be a mentor and see the need for more godly women to step out of their comfort zones and mentor others. I am currently looking for mentoring resources to start a program within our women’s ministry to help our ladies connect with one another in this way. Thank you for your website! Keep using this gift! It is needed!
    Blessings!

Thanks for sharing Joni! I’m certain you are such a blessing to the women you are mentoring. Your comments are so encouraging. Please continue blessing and pouring into the next generation. Keep in touch and let me know if I can help in anyway. Sounds like you and I have the same mentoring passion. Be Blessed!
