Are you tired of being left out, passed over and  stuck? Do you desperately need someone to listen? Are you currently seeking a mentor?

No matter what generation you belong to, 75% of today’s Christians are all asking the same questions.

“Why can’t I move forward?”

“Is this all life has for me?”

“Will things in life ever change for the better and move forward?”

As an inquisitive teenager, I was asking all of those questions too.

Everything changed for me when I was eighteen years old. While I was living in New York City attending New York University and planning to become a Broadway star, God revealed to me His ultimate and better plan for my life.

First, I made the decision to become a true follower of Christ and the next morning, while in church, I received a Mentor. With my mentor walking alongside me on a weekly basis, decisions were still difficult, but no longer impossible. She was my spiritual guide, encourager, and prayer support.

“Faith is a journey, a journey that we dare not take alone. We need the courage to ask hard questions. We need the wisdom to discern God’s leading. While Jesus is always present with us, a safe person—our mentor—can help us connect and find God in the messiness of our questions, doubts, and confusion.”

Without a doubt, mentors make a huge difference. I know. I’ve been mentoring and training mentors for the past thirty-five years. I am convinced, the best mentor is a person who is constantly challenging themselves and pursuing growth in their own life. They’re not content with the status quo, and they don’t put on religious masks.”

Here are five easy steps to learn how to soar with a mentor in your life.

Be Teachable and Approachable Never be afraid to ask your questions with a humble heart and a teachable spirit.

“Whatever it takes to gain Wisdom, do it. To gain understanding, do it! Never forget this! Never stray from what I am telling you.” Proverbs 4:5

Focus—Face To Face Get rid of all distractions for 60 minutes and be in the mentoring moment. Yes! Your iphone needs to be on vibrate. Treasure every minute your mentor is spending with you!

“My son, stay focused; listen to the wisdom I have gained; give attention to what I have learned about life.” Proverbs 5:1″

Be Consistent  Your trust in a living and active God, unwavering faith in Jesus, and consistent time with Him and your Mentor will move you forward and keep you soaring through the good and the tough moments you face.

“And as for you, brothers and sisters, never tire of doing good.”                         2 Thessalonians 3:13

Grow! Grow! Grow! The moment of deciding to become a follower of Jesus is a life-long journey. It is very important that we continue to grow spiritually, physically, mentally and emotionally. It’s impossible to grow when you isolate yourself. God never intended for us to be alone. Seek a mentor who is growing in their walk with God and will help you grow in yours.

“There will never come a time when you and I “arrive,” when we stop growing and learning. Often, our daily reality is struggle. Mentoring won’t make life easier per se. It can’t protect you from life’s hardships and difficulties, but it will give you a new purpose and meaning in the midst of your struggles. A mentor can help you see where God is at work, even in the difficulties.”

“…bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God…”   Col. 1:10

Persevere in Prayer Learn to pray out loud when you are alone with God behind-closed-doors. Praying out loud with your mentor is also a huge positive action in the right direction. Personal prayers change us and can change the world around us.

Mentoring is all about relationship. Prayer is all about relationship. You will see the answers to your prayers over a period of time, but the amazing thing is when God uses you to be the answer to someone else’s prayers.

Be intentional. Step out. Reach up. Do life together with a mentor.

Mentoring is never just about us. It’s about God working in us to prepare us for what He wants to do through us.”
