You are not alone.

Are you struggling to find a way to reach the next generation for the Lord?

Did you know that the Millennials are hungry for someone to know them by name, care and persevere in a face-to-face lasting relationship? This is what I call a mentoring relationship.

Mentoring is a win-win situation: The Younger generations are encouraged and grow, and older generations find new purpose. Perhaps you are longing to find a mentor, or you’d love to become one.

I received my mentor in my early college years. I can’t imagine going through my college days, young married years, my kids’ terrible twos, career transitions, the death of my parents, and countless other rattling life events without the support of mentors.

Now, years later, I have the privilege of mentoring younger women. Some are young professional businesswomen, others teachers, musicians, designers or moms. Some have cute little apartments, others rambunctious little ones. As we sit and talk over lattes or hot chocolate or sweet tea, I am inspired by their courage and honesty. Their eagerness to grow and change and become. Their heart to love people and join God in doing good.

“Mentoring is never about us. It’s about God working in us to prepare us for what He wants to do through us.”

And you don’t have to be an expert to mentor someone else. It’s about seeing the potential in another person and walking with them in becoming who God created them to be.

You can do that now!

Many women admit in our conversations over a cup of coffee, “As soon as I start thinking and praying about mentoring someone, a million insecurities pop up in my mind. All those lies of not being good enough and not having anything to offer creep back in. How do I know where God is leading me? I’m excited about the possibility of investing in others, but where do I start?”

Here are 3 Tips to help you connect and get started mentoring the next generation:

Pray and Walk across the room, introduce yourself and start a simple conversation

  • Share what you admire about them and how you see their potential
  • Be Authentic and transparent. Share the short version of your God story.
  • Invite them to meet for coffee and conversations in the following week.

When you step outside of yourself and intentionally step into another person’s life—taking time to care, to listen, to encourage, to share what God’s taught you—that’s passing on the baton.

I want to encourage you! Now is the time to pass the baton on to the next generation. You and I are right now living out the scripture, Esther 4:14 “…And who knows but that you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”

The only way to get across the finish line is together! Cheering each other on, crying together, celebrating together, sharing our stories, instilling hope, receiving new life, and fixing our eyes on Jesus until we get home.

God has already gone in front of you, paving the way for where He wants to use you. Look. Listen. Notice. Mentoring is an investment that will outlast you and live on long after you are gone. God longs for you and me to speak life and pour into the next generation. God encourages all of us to share our God stories in Psalm 78:4 “…we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the LORD, his power, and the wonders he has done.”

Now it’s your turn. Step out. Challenge yourself. Go after the dreams God has put in your heart. Give yourself away. Invest in the next generation and draw them closer to God. Talk with God about your next step. Who is God bringing across your path? How can you pour your life into them?J

Join the conversation and leave a comment at the end of the blog and you’ll be entered to win one of my two books on mentoring being given away this week: Face To Face : Discover How Mentoring Can Change Your Life and my brand new release Side By Side: 8 Conversations To Build Your Confidence In Christ. An 8-week Bible Study.

Tell us why you need a mentor, why you would like to become one, or what experience you have had pouring into the next generation. Don’t forget to mention where you live in the country. All U.S. residents will be entered in the drawing this week.
